Mux alternative
The predictable alternative to Mux
Everything you need to host, encode, and stream video at one flat monthly price, with 2 to 5 TB of delivery included and a dashboard your whole team can use. No metered encoding, storage, and delivery to reconcile.
Why teams switch from Mux to HeapStream
Flat pricing, not a metered bill
One monthly price by storage, with 2 to 5 TB of delivery included. Mux meters encoding, storage, and delivery separately, per minute, so a viral video means a bigger invoice.
Free encoding at every quality
Encode every quality up to 4K, instantly on upload, at no charge. Mux bills per minute to encode beyond its basic quality tier and charges more for higher resolutions.
Built for teams, not just developers
Upload, caption, brand, and share from a real dashboard — while keeping a full REST API and OpenAPI 3.1 spec for engineers. Mux is API-first with an engineering console.
Growth doesn’t grow your invoice
Mux bills every minute delivered, so audience growth grows the invoice. HeapStream’s flat plan means it never changes your bill.
Upload, organize, caption, and share — all from one dashboard.

When Mux might be the better fit
If you need live streaming (RTMP/SRT), studio-grade multi-DRM, or the very largest-scale infrastructure, Mux is purpose-built for that — and its first 100,000 delivery minutes each month are free, so a small project can run on Mux very cheaply. HeapStream is on-demand hosting and streaming at a flat price. We’re happy to say HeapStream’s analytics is openly modeled on Mux Data.
Mux vs HeapStream — FAQ
How is HeapStream cheaper than Mux?
At small scale it may not be — Mux includes 100,000 free delivery minutes a month, and its basic-quality encoding is free. The difference shows as you grow: Mux meters encoding, storage, and delivery per minute and per resolution, so the bill scales with your audience. HeapStream is one flat fee by storage with delivery included, or $25 per TB-month and $10 per TB on pay-as-you-go, with free encoding up to 4K either way.
Will my bill jump if a video goes viral?
On Mux, delivery past the free monthly allowance is billed per minute streamed, so a spike shows up on the invoice. On HeapStream the plan price is fixed under a fair-use policy.
Does HeapStream do live streaming like Mux?
Not yet — Mux genuinely offers first-class live (RTMP/SRT). HeapStream is on-demand hosting, streaming, and processing.
Can I keep using my own player and API?
Yes — bring your own player plus a built-in HTML5 player, and a full REST API with an OpenAPI 3.1 spec you can generate a client from.
What about DRM?
HeapStream protects with signed URLs, private videos, and watermarking. It does not offer studio multi-DRM; Mux sells that as a paid add-on.
